The students pick a scene from the film “Hidden Figures”. The scene must contain stereotypes, and the task is to record a voice over for the scene with ScreenPal while explaining how different job functions are correlated with different stereotypes (gender, ethnicity) and how stereotypes influence the achievement of success.
In pairs, the students are going to describe a scene showing some form of stereotypical behaviour from the film to each other. In plenary the class discusses how the scenes show discrimination and/or stereotypes. They also discuss which words the students used to describe the scenes and how these terms/words contribute to framing the characters in the film in a stereotypical manner.
The students are going to match quotes from the film. The quotes are divided into two separate parts and all quotes are mixed. After pairing the quotes, the students talk about which stereotypes are present in the quotes. At the end of the activity, the right combination of quotes is shown. The class discusses what the quotes meant for the characters in the film and women in general. The discussion must also focus on the necessity of why it is important to deal with stereotypes at an organisational level too.
